1. Mirror: « smoke and mirrors »
Meaning (Signification): Something that deceives or distorts the truth:
Your excuse is clearly smoke and mirrors.

2. Straw: « The last straw (that broke the camel’s back) »
Meaning (Signification): The final additional small burden that makes the entirety of one’s difficulties unbearable.
Équivalence en Français: « La goutte qui fait déborder le vase »
3. Tiles: « Go out on the tiles »
Meaning (Signification): To go to bars, clubs, parties, etc., and have an enjoyable time, often to the point of excess.
Équivalence en Français: « Faire la noce / la fête »
This week I have plenty of time: I will go out on the tiles every night and enjoy myself.

4. Cat: It’s raining cats and dogs!
Meaning (Signification): Something that you say when it is raining very heavily
Équivalence en Français: “Pleuvoir des cordes”
It’s raining cats and dogs out today! I cannot drive on, I cannot see anything through the windscreen. It is too dangerous!
(Il pleut des cordes aujourd’hui. Je ne peux pas continuer à rouler. Je ne vois rien à travers le pare-brise. C’est trop dangereux !)
5. Cord : « Cut the (umbilical) cord »
Meaning (Signification): to stop needing someone else to look after you and start acting independently
Usage notes: An umbilical cord, (le cordon ombilical) is a long narrow tube of flesh which connects a baby to its mother when it is growing inside her.
Équivalence en Français: “Couper le cordon”
She needs to cut the umbilical cord: she should stop living with her parents and earn her own money to become independent.
(Elle a besoin de couper le cordon: elle devrait arrêter de vivre chez ses parents et gagner son propre argent pour devenir indépendante)
6. Couch= (sofa= settee ) « Couch potato »
Meaning (Signification): A person who spends much time sitting or lying down, usually watching television.
(Quelqu’un qui passe des heures sur le sofa, en général pour regarder la télé).

Cependant, n’y a-t-il pas une coquille entre couch et coach ?
